IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Artificial intelligence is the future of our planet and one basic feature of it is providing news of what's going on around us. As this continues people will get dependent on ai for every news and slowly the trend of newspapers will disappear. I totally agree withi this statement, and I strongly believe that in the near future people will abandon it and stop buying it.

Nowadays, every teenager and adult are getting the news from the internet, maybe our parents are the last generation who are buying newspaper for the latest information. Ai has changed everything, now you don't even need to type what you what to know about you simply just ask you phone and that will do the thing. For instance, if you have an iphone and you what to know what are the weather conditions will be for the next week, you can just ask siri like " hey siri, what are the weather conditions for the next week?", and your phone will tell you in detail.

There are vast number of advantages of using ai for information. Back when newspaper was the prime source of the news, sometimes the news does not provide all the information, which is not the case now, if you got the news you can ask for its details too which was the limitation of newspaper. However, it also come with some disadvantages, such as more screen time which can cause headache and network issues caused by weather or bad network in remote areas. But these issues are very minor in front of the advantages it provide.

In conclusion, maybe the newspaper was the prime and comfortable source of news in the past, but artificial intelligence is the future. Therefore, it is very hard to imagine that newspaper will still exist in the future right beside the technology for the source of information.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear: you agree that printed newspapers will disappear, and you give relevant reasons, including the convenience of asking a phone for information and the ability to request further details. However, the response only partially addresses the exact claim. The prompt concerns both newspapers and books, and the possibility of reading everything online without paying; your discussion focuses almost entirely on news and AI, without considering books, online access costs, or why printed books might also stop being bought. Some points are asserted rather than developed—for example, that older generations are the last newspaper buyers. To strengthen the response, address both formats and explain the limits of your prediction, such as readers who value print or paid digital content.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs give reasons and a qualification, and the conclusion returns to your position. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, though. The opening moves from AI providing news to the disappearance of newspapers without fully explaining the link, and the third paragraph shifts from the limitations of newspapers to screen time and network problems quite abruptly. The long Siri example also takes up space without advancing the argument about books or free online reading. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the task’s claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including topic-related terms such as “prime source,” “latest information,” “network issues,” and “remote areas.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “dependent on AI” and “source of information.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive: “the news” and “information” recur frequently, while “do the thing” is vague and “comfortable source” is not a natural description in this context. Spelling and informal forms such as “withi,” “what you what to know,” and “iphone” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for discussing publishing and access, and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional phrasing (“if you have an iphone…”) and a contrast introduced by “However.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain. For example, “every teenager and adult are getting” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “There are vast number” needs an article. In “sometimes the news does not provide all the information, which is not the case now,” the sentence joins ideas in a way that makes the relationship unclear. The Siri example also contains an awkward question structure. Practise checking agreement and articles, and divide long sentences where the connection between clauses is uncertain.
