IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In the future, people will not buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online through mobile phones or other devices without paying. I fully agree that people should read newspapers or books online rather than purchase physical copies.
On the one hand, if people read newspapers online, it has multiple benefits for them because people can read anywhere and at any time. Also, they are not required to pay for newspapers or purchase them, so they can easily read them. After that, they have no issue storing them or creating waste. For example, in India, the younger generation reads news in e-newspapers or through social media, so no cost is required for newspapers, and they can read them easily at home, school or any other place.
On the other hand, if people do not buy newspapers, it has some disadvantages as well. Media and other companies that print newspapers may lose business, and people who work in media or newspaper companies may lose their jobs. Therefore, it also has some disadvantages. For example, nowadays, most people prefer to read news on their phones or watch it on television, so newspaper companies may suffer losses in their printing businesses, and workers may lose their jobs.
In conclusion, both perspectives have valid points, but I recommend that people read newspapers online because printed newspapers create waste in our homes, and once they are read, they may not be used again. In addition, people do not need to pay for online newspapers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the shift to online reading and the potential decline of printed media. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you state you 'fully agree' in the introduction, the body paragraphs present a balanced view, which slightly contradicts your initial stance. To improve, ensure your supporting arguments are more deeply explored rather than just listing points. For instance, the argument about job losses is relevant but could be expanded by discussing the broader economic impact or the shift in journalism models. The conclusion is clear, but ensure it consistently reflects the position taken in the introduction to maintain a strong, unified argument throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in your argument. However, the flow between sentences within paragraphs can be improved. Some transitions, such as 'After that', feel slightly mechanical or unnatural in this context. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms to refer back to previous ideas) is more precise to create a smoother, more sophisticated progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'printed newspapers', 'e-newspapers', and 'physical copies'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'newspapers', 'read', and 'people' frequently. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and collocations. For example, instead of repeating 'read', you could use 'consume information', 'access content', or 'browse articles'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise academic terms will help elevate your writing style and demonstrate greater control over the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical issues, such as 'no cost is required for newspapers' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'it has some disadvantages' (which is a bit repetitive). Your control of punctuation is generally good, and errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, while ensuring they remain accurate and natural.
