IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

People will adopt the habit of online reading rather than buying newspapers, magzines or books as these will be available on different online platforms without even paying for the product. I partially agree with the statement as it is easier and convinent to read books or news articles online on a screen, but not paying for the product might lead to piracy.

First and foremost, all the reading material is now available online. People have the flexibility and accessibility to such articles or books on a single click of their phone or any other device. This wider availability helps the material to reach wider audiences as well as induce more people to build a reading habit. People need to understand that publishing articles on company's website and apps comes at cost.

Publication houses may not levy any charges for newspapers or books initially but to ensure smooth operation of their electronic mediums requires funding. This cost will be charged to the readers in form of subscription model or pay-per view. For instance, kindle is one the most used and successfull device in the reading community for reading books. Customers pay for each individual book, whereas there are online libraries you can get access to on a subscription model. These electronic tools help readers provide the same experience of physcial book reading. If people are not willing to pay for these models or arrangements these might lead to piracy.

To conclude, people have started to shift to an electronic medium for reading such as online libraries and the kindle; however, if they are not willing to pay for this better convinence and technological infrastructure, this might lead to piracy and other problems as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the shift toward online reading and the economic implications of free versus paid content. You clearly state a partial agreement, which is maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you touch upon the cost of production and the risk of piracy, the argument could be strengthened by exploring why some people might still prefer physical books or the specific reasons why free content might not be sustainable long-term. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, restating the introduction rather than synthesizing the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure each paragraph provides deeper analysis rather than just stating the obvious.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the transition between the cost of digital platforms and the mention of Kindle is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will help improve the overall flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accessibility', 'subscription model', and 'technological infrastructure'. However, there are some spelling errors ('magzines', 'convinent', 'successfull', 'physcial') and minor word choice issues. The repetition of 'reading' and 'online' throughout the text suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to express your ideas more precisely. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensure you proofread for basic spelling errors, which can distract the reader from your otherwise clear arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'comes at cost' (should be 'at a cost') and 'these might lead to piracy' (where 'these' lacks a clear antecedent). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where sentence structure could be more refined for better readability. You have a good grasp of basic grammar, but to move into the higher bands, you should aim for more complex, error-free sentences and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistently accurate throughout the essay.
