IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the future, people will not buy either printed newspapers or books because everything will be available online for free. I partially agree with the sentiment because convenience is what people chose over anything. But still there will people who want it as the hard copy because of the way they get used to it.

Convenience is what people matters more. Because people are moving forward into a fast paced environment where people would choose means to ease the life situations. Thus getting things available online make it advantageous to people so that they don't have to carry things like newspaper or books to wherever they go. For instance, online newspapers help the audience to read it with convenience. People can zoom it if they need to see it more clearly and is very handy. In such ways, more people would be choosing the means of softcopy than hard copy.

There are people who prioritize satisfaction over convenience. People who routinely reads matters from printed material, which is a part of their daily life whether it is newspaper or a book. So they are conditioned to get satisfaction from reading from hard copies which give the sense of touching and having a live experience. For example, people who read from printed materials are trained to read it from papers, which provide both physical and visual impact to their experiences. Such people will not switch to soft copy materials in future.

Thus i believe, a good proportion of people would choose convenience over satisfaction, while others prefer vise versa. The merits of softcopy like convenience make people choose online materials while others go with satisfaction which will not lead to the extinction of printed materials in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the convenience of digital media and the enduring appeal of physical formats. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the second paragraph focuses heavily on 'convenience' without introducing broader implications, such as the environmental impact or the cost-effectiveness of digital versus print. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported argument rather than restating the same point in different ways. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but the overall depth of analysis could be improved by exploring the nuance of why printed materials might survive beyond just 'satisfaction'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instance', 'Thus', and 'In such ways', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. For example, the transition 'Thus i believe' in the final paragraph is a bit abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; in the second paragraph, 'In such ways' refers back to a list of benefits that were not fully articulated. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fast paced environment', 'extinction', and 'physical and visual impact'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'people who routinely reads matters' is awkward; 'matters' is not the correct noun here, and 'reads' should be 'read'. Similarly, 'vise versa' is a misspelling of 'vice versa'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary choices are natural. While your range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you need to use less common lexical items with greater precision to move into the higher band categories.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'convenience is what people chose' (should be 'choose'), 'people who routinely reads' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'the way they get used to it' (slightly unnatural phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as the lack of capitalization for 'i' and some missing articles. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they are error-free will help you achieve a higher score.
