IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the future, people will no longer purchase print media such as newspapers and books as they will have a free access to everything online. I completely agree with this notion because an increasing number of people are becoming concerned about environment and reading anything from internet is much cheaper and convenient.

Nowadays, people are well aware about the fact that limiting paper usage is beneficial for environment. This is because, most of the paper items are made of wood pulp, which is extracted from cutting trees on a large scale. As a result, a majority of people are avoiding the things made of paper. For example, a large number of individuals have shifted to online books, so that they can make their contribution to protect the environment. Hence, it may be expected that in the future, more people will choose to read online to save forests.

Moreover, reading from online sources is significantly cheaper and convenient compared to newspapers and books. People are required to make monthly payments for newspapers and magazines, whereas they can have a free access to latest updates on their smartphones. Similarly, individuals are no longer required to visit books stores and libraries, as they can read any book on different websites. For instance, Amazon offers many books on its website in a much lower price compared to printed paper books. Therefore, they prefer reading books online instead of visiting libraries or books stores.

To conclude, I strongly agree that in the future, people will prefer to read online as it will save their time and money with free and easy access to all resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The arguments regarding environmental concerns and cost-effectiveness are relevant and well-supported with examples. However, the response could be improved by addressing the 'without paying' aspect of the prompt more critically, as the essay assumes everything will be free, whereas many online resources still require subscriptions. The development is logical, but some points could be expanded further to reach a higher band. Overall, it is a clear and focused response that meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the environmental argument and the economic argument is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Similarly', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. While the flow is generally good, some of the linking could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel in certain transitions. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'wood pulp', 'print media', and 'online sources' correctly. There are some minor errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'have a free access' (should be 'have free access') and 'in a much lower price' (should be 'at a much lower price'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, it lacks the range of less common or idiomatic expressions that would be required for a higher band score. The language is functional and accurate enough to avoid confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are several recurring errors, such as missing articles ('beneficial for environment' should be 'beneficial for the environment') and minor prepositional errors. While complex structures are attempted, they are not always perfectly executed. The majority of sentences are error-free, but the frequency of minor slips prevents the response from reaching the 8.0 band. Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a missing space after a period in the second paragraph.
