IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the upcoming time, people will stop to read from newspapers and books because anyone can read everything on the internet without spending a single penny. I largely agree with this statement because it will save your time and money. However, it may have some disadvantages in certain situations.

The primary reason I largely agree with this view is that one can save a valuable amount of money as well as prestige time. This is because you do not have to buy any book from a market and waste time searching for a particular book or a newspaper. In result, you can access any book for free sitting at home on the internet without having any trouble. For instance, readers living in remote areas can read or access resources without travelling to major cities to buy them. Additionally, it is easier to carry online devices rather than a book which occupies space.

Although I largely support this view, it may create some disadvantages for certain individuals who have weak eyesight or feel headache while looking at the screen. This may occur because some people don't use screens to prevent themselves from headache and do not want to wear eyeglasses. However, this limitation is relatively minor and does not outweigh the overall benefits.

In conclusion, although it can cause difficulties for some people who have problems with their eyesight, I largely agree that in future most people will stop buying printed newspapers and books and will read online because of the easy accessibility of resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and providing supporting arguments. You have covered both the convenience of online reading and the potential drawbacks for certain users. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'prestige time' is unclear, and the discussion on physical health could be expanded further to reach a higher band. To improve, ensure that each paragraph contains a fully developed explanation rather than just a brief statement. The response is relevant throughout, but the depth of analysis is currently at a mid-range level, as some points are repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In conclusion', 'Additionally', and 'For instance' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is clear, but the flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'remote areas' and 'accessibility of resources'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'prestige time' (likely meaning 'precious time') and 'stop to read' (should be 'stop reading'). These word-choice errors indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate rather than relying on basic or slightly misused terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'In result' (should be 'As a result') and 'feel headache' (should be 'get a headache'). Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage and verb patterns. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and common idiomatic expressions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band score.
