IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In the future, people will stop reading from newspapers and books because anyone can read everything on the internet without spending a single penny. I largely agree with this statement because it will save time and money. However, it may have some disadvantages in certain situations.
The primary reason I largely agree with this view is that one can save a valuable amount of money as well as precious time. This is because you do not have to buy any book from a market and waste time searching for a particular book or a newspaper. As a result, you can access any book for free sitting at home on the internet without having any trouble. For instance, readers living in remote areas can read or access resources without travelling to major cities to buy them. Additionally, it is easier to carry online devices rather than a book which occupies space.
Although I largely support this view, it may create some disadvantages for certain individuals who have weak eyesight or get a headache while looking at the screen. This may occur because some people don't use screens to prevent themselves from headaches and do not want to wear eyeglasses. However, this limitation is relatively minor and does not outweigh the overall benefits.
In conclusion, although it can cause difficulties for some people who have problems with their eyesight, I largely agree that in the future most people will stop buying printed newspapers and books and will read online because of the easy accessibility of resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. Your arguments regarding convenience and cost-effectiveness are relevant and well-supported. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the counter-argument regarding health issues is brief and could have been expanded to better balance the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides more depth and nuance, perhaps by discussing the cultural or educational implications of the shift to digital media. Overall, the response is focused and directly answers the question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'As a result', and 'Additionally' to connect your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main arguments from the counter-argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more seamless. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accessibility', 'resources', and 'occupies space' correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. Phrases like 'without having any trouble' and 'waste time' are functional but basic. To improve, aim to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific academic vocabulary. For example, instead of 'spending a single penny', you could use 'financial burden' or 'cost-prohibitive'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you express your ideas with greater precision and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your grammar is generally accurate. Most sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are minor issues, such as 'buy any book from a market' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'carry online devices' (which should be 'digital devices'). While you show control over basic structures, the range of complex grammatical forms is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied sentence patterns, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
