IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the future, people will stop reading newspapers and books because anyone can read everything on the internet without spending a single penny. I largely agree with this statement because it will save time and money. However, it may have some disadvantages in certain situations.

The primary reason I largely agree with this view is that one can save a valuable amount of money as well as precious time. This is because you do not have to buy any books from a market and waste time searching for a particular book or a newspaper. As a result, you can access any book for free sitting at home on the internet without having any trouble. For instance, readers living in remote areas can read or access resources without travelling to major cities to buy them. Additionally, it is easier to carry online devices rather than a book which occupies space.

Although I largely support this view, it may create some disadvantages for certain individuals who have weak eyesight or get a headache while looking at the screen. This may occur because some people don't use screens to prevent themselves from headaches and do not want to wear eyeglasses. However, this limitation is relatively minor and does not outweigh the overall benefits.

In conclusion, although it can cause difficulties for some people who have problems with their eyesight, I largely agree that in the future most people will stop buying printed newspapers and books and will read online because of the convenience of resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding convenience, cost-saving, and accessibility are relevant and logically developed. However, the essay could be improved by exploring the counter-argument more deeply; while the health concerns are mentioned, the discussion on the cultural or intellectual value of physical books is absent. The response is balanced, but the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced analysis of why printed media might persist, rather than focusing solely on the physical drawbacks of screens.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main argument from the counter-argument. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the transition signals and ensure that the relationship between ideas is more fluid, rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'remote areas' and 'resources'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common phrasing (e.g., 'waste time', 'have any trouble'). There is a lack of more sophisticated or academic collocations that would demonstrate a wider lexical range. To improve, incorporate more precise vocabulary related to digital media and traditional publishing to elevate the tone of the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, 'anyone can read everything on the internet' is grammatically sound. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat restricted. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied subordinate clauses and perhaps some passive constructions or conditional forms to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
