IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
I do agree to some extent but not fully that in near future nobody will buy printed newspaper and changed the medium fully to online.
Newspapers and books plays an important role in society. People use these for years as a source of gaining information and knowledge. The usage of internet and online platforms had been drastically increased in the last decade. It is mainly because of the easy access and availability of internet. Internet has played an important role for transferring the information to a large number of people as people nowadays spent an average of 10-15 hours online on various platforms, according to a survey. Nowadays, people use these platforms for entertainment and to get the knowledge of the latest news with a click.
Although, even the platforms that people use for gaining information had a price, both in terms of money, time and health of the consumer. By being online this much caused a negative impact in overall lifestyle of people, and people are getting more and more aware of this fact. The traditional medium of newspaper and books helps people remain connected to each other, and it is safe for children. As the availability of every kind of information to children is dangerous and you cannot have parental control on what kind of content they are consuming, but with books and newspaper they are not exposed to every irrelevant information. Some people love to read books and newspaper in their hands as they can mark, highlight and making them their own by writing information with a pen or pencil. The availability of all kind of information online has drastically changed the number of book and newspaper reader, but they are not fully excluded and physical form like books, novels, and newspaper does not cause much physical stress on eyes.
To sum up there will be a significant change and increase in number of online knowledge consumers but it will not fully replace the preference of people and the importance of books and newspaper in our society and culture.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position that you only partially agree with the statement. You provide relevant arguments regarding the convenience of online media versus the tactile and health benefits of traditional print. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, the point about parental control is a strong argument that could have been expanded with more specific examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that every paragraph focuses on extending your main arguments with more depth rather than just listing points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'Although' and 'To sum up' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of linking words could be more varied. For example, the transition between the discussion of internet usage and the negative impacts of online media could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always clear to avoid ambiguity. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'drastically increased', 'tactile', and 'irrelevant information'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'get the knowledge of' instead of 'access information' and 'making them their own' which is slightly informal. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision could be improved to better suit an academic context. Focusing on collocations and more formal phrasing will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('Newspapers and books plays') and tense inconsistencies ('usage... had been drastically increased'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'By being online this much caused a negative impact'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency will significantly improve your accuracy.
