IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This question argues wether books and newspaper will be replaced by online digital reading platforms due to the benefit of not having expenses. While some argue that literacy is an art associated to physical books and newspaper, others challenge that reading should be convient and accessible to people of all needs. While both prespectives have their merit,I strongly agree with the statement that online reading will be more popular, the underlying reason for this is just because of the burden of paying for books and newspaper but also that it is more convient and flexible to our daily lives.

One fundamental aspect is that the development of technology has solved many problems. For example, buying books tend to take time as you need to go to the mall to buy it or wait for the delivery if you orderd it one online. To add on, physical books are more expensive than e-books, the price could be down to 3 times the price of a physical book, not to mention that you can also know just download books through pdf and don’t need to pay for anything. Moreover, the accuracy of the statement is be becoming reality, with the rise of digital books and kindle, reading online has become very popular and accepted by the public.

On the contrary, the term ‘nobody’ in the statement above could be overexaggerated. While it is undeniable that reading online is more popularized in our generation, reading physical books still has its advantages. It has been proven by Dr. Shepherd that people who read physical books tend to feel more relaxed and causes less strain on their eyes, causing slight headaches. In addition, many book lovers favour this alternative better as they simply love the aesthetic and feel of having an actual book on hand.

In conclusion , I firmly believe that literacy is a vital art that should be protected in our society, its shapes mind and offers knowledge. Therefore, reading should be more available to the public, wether its physical or digital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. You acknowledge the counter-argument regarding the aesthetic value of physical books, which adds depth to your response. However, your development is slightly uneven; for instance, the claim that digital books are 'free' is a broad generalization that could be challenged, as many digital platforms require subscriptions or purchases. To reach a higher band, ensure your supporting points are more nuanced and logically airtight. Overall, your position is consistent throughout the essay, and the main ideas are clearly presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and sentence flow. For example, the phrase 'the underlying reason for this is just because of the burden' is slightly clunky. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices to create a more natural, fluid progression between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'aesthetic', 'undeniable', and 'popularized'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'wether' (spelled 'whether'), 'convient' (spelled 'convenient'), and 'orderd'. Additionally, the phrase 'the price could be down to 3 times the price' is awkward and lacks clarity. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, you need to work on spelling accuracy and using more precise collocations to move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a good start. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('buying books tend to take time') and punctuation errors (e.g., the space before the comma in 'In conclusion ,'). There are also minor errors in tense and word form, such as 'its shapes mind' instead of 'it shapes the mind'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation consistency.
