IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, digital technology has transformed the way people access information and entertainment. Some people believe that printed newspapers and books will disappear because everything will be available online for free. While I agree that digital reading will become increasingly popular, I disagree that printed publications will completely disappear or that all online content will be free.
On the one hand, the internet has made reading more convenient than ever before. People can access news articles, e-books, and magazines instantly using smartphones, tablets, or computers. In addition, many websites and digital libraries provide free content, making it unnecessary for readers to purchase printed materials. As a result, fewer people, particularly younger generations, are buying physical newspapers, as they prefer to receive news through online platforms and social media.
On the other hand, it is unrealistic to assume that all online content will be free. Many newspapers and publishers now charge subscription fees to access premium articles and e-books. Writers, journalists, and publishing companies need financial support to produce high-quality content. Furthermore, many readers still prefer printed books because they are easier on the eyes, do not require electronic devices, and provide a more enjoyable reading experience. Collectors and students also continue to value printed editions for study and long-term reference.
In conclusion, although digital reading is becoming more common and may reduce the demand for printed books and newspapers, I do not believe they will disappear entirely. Moreover, it is unlikely that all online reading materials will be available free of charge.
