IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Electronic books and newspaper are becoming increasingly popular because of their several benefits. Many people believe that everybody in the future will read or use electronic books or newspaper because of availability and flexibility. This essay will discuss and explain why I partly agree with this statement.

On the one hand, electronic books and newspaper are increasingly becoming popular, especially among young people and university students because they provide several facilities to readers. They are easier to store and portable. For instance, students can download hundreds of books or news on a single device like phone, tablet or e-reader and read them anywhere. Moreover, they are often cheaper than the printed books or newspaper and some are even free.

In addition, readers can adjust the font sizes, instantly search for specific words and use built-in dictionaries, which makes reading easier, comfortable and eventually enjoyable.

On the other hand, printed books and newspaper are still used, specially among children and older people who enjoy the experience of holding a physical book. They are easier and more convenient on the eyes and enjoyable to read. For example, children like to read books or newspaper featuring cartoon characters and with colorful illustrations, which attract their attention because they are easier to understand and entertainment. Additionally, older people often prefer printed version because they are used to this version or feel comfort, which encourages them to enjoy reading.

In my opinion, as both formats has many advantages, I think they will continue to exist in the future with people choosing one depending on their perspectives, needs and circumstances.
