IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the upcoming time, it is argued that nobody will purchase printed newspapers and books due to modern technology available and people will be able to know everything online without buying any printed materials. I firmly agree with this statement because in the future, due to internet facility every individual has an access to search latest news more conveniently through mobile and students get lots of information online within second.

The internet facility is common in every part of the world. There are many sites available for news such as different news channels, social media and youtube, any news or information spread within a short time from one part to the other part of the world. This is because of a small computer mobile, and it is more convenient for people to hear news on it instead of buying a news paper. For example, the news related to the US and Iran war was spread around the world in just five minutes, and more the 80% people listen this news on their mobile.

Secondly, students like to get information online because it is very easy for them. There are hundreds of websites have a facility to download the book instead of purchasing it, and students are mostly preferred to use online literature because of easy accessibility to many sites which have more options and ideas related to every subjects. For instance, artificial intelligence gives an opportunity to students that they can search more ideas in short time. It's also helps to broaden their knowledge.

In conclusion, there will be less popular printed media as compared to online stuff without paying in the future, I agree with this statement due to its easy convenience and more information available in short time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of the shift toward online media. The main ideas—convenience, accessibility, and the speed of information—are relevant. However, the development is somewhat limited. The argument that 'nobody' will buy printed materials is an extreme position that could have been nuanced by acknowledging the persistence of niche markets or physical book preferences. While the response covers the requirements, the supporting examples, such as the mention of the 'US and Iran war', are slightly underdeveloped and lack a broader context. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the implications of this shift beyond just convenience, perhaps discussing the impact on journalism or education.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition 'Secondly' is used, but the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that ideas flow more naturally between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'accessibility' and 'artificial intelligence', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'in the upcoming time' instead of 'in the near future' and 'online stuff' which is too informal for an academic essay. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding informal or vague terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'every individual has an access' (article error), 'students are mostly preferred to use' (passive voice misuse), and 'It's also helps' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
