IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Technology has become significantly advanced. People perform their daily bases work easily with the help of advanced technologies. Nowadays, Instead of purchasing newspaper people get to knew about all news through online available sources, Although in upcoming years printed newspapers or books will not be brought by anyone. I fully agree with this viewpoint.

To begin with, easy accessibility of internet and multiple price ranges are pivotal reason why people choose to read newspaper, books and novels online. In today's digital era, people have become more conscious about spending money wisely, and online reading provides them with a convenient and affordable alternative to printed materials. For instance, many websites and applications offer free or low-cost access to a wide range of newspapers, books and novels, which allows readers to save money while accessing the content they want. Therefore, people would rather prefer read everything they want online without paying.

In addition to this, online sources are more convenient and environmentally friendly than printed materials. People can access newspapers, books and novels at any time and from any place by using smartphones, tablets or laptops. This saves them from carrying heavy books or purchasing newspapers every day. For example, instead of buying a physical newspaper every morning, people can read the same news through different online platforms within a few minutes. Therefore, the convenience of digital reading and its positive impact on the environment are likely to reduce the demand for printed materials in the future.

To conclude, I strongly agree that printed newspapers and books will become less popular in the future because online sources are affordable, easily accessible and convenient. As technology continues to develop, people are likely to depend increasingly on digital platforms for reading.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding cost-effectiveness, convenience, and environmental impact. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument that everything will be available 'without paying' is not fully explored or challenged, which is a key part of the prompt. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced analysis, perhaps acknowledging the counter-argument that some high-quality journalism or academic literature may remain behind paywalls, thereby strengthening your overall position through a more balanced discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'In addition to this,' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid rather than relying on standard signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pivotal,' 'digital era,' and 'environmentally friendly.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'daily bases work' (should be 'daily tasks') and 'will not be brought by anyone' (should be 'bought'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'people get to knew about' should be 'people get to know about,' and 'people would rather prefer read' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'would prefer to read'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb forms throughout the text. While these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of modal verbs to improve your accuracy.
