IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently, there has been a discussion about whether printed newspaper and books will decline in the future as individuals will no longer purchase them but prefer the social media platforms which are free. I strongly agree with this view because not only has social media platforms made information free, it has also enabled news to be obtained more faster than the newspapers. This essay will discuss both views, before reaching a conclusion.

Firstly, social media has made the availability of information free for people in society. With a good smartphone and a stable network all the information individuals needs to know around the world are made available for free. For instance, during the period of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak the Twitter and Facebook were highly utilized for obtaining information because they do not include any cost. This has contributed to the reason why people will no longer buy newspapers in the future.

Secondly, social media platforms has accounted for the fastest means for spreading information. Once an incident happens the TikTok and Twitter will be the fast media where individuals can read the information, eliminating the idea of waiting the next day for news to be pretended which is associated with the newspapers. For example, during the period of end scars in Nigeria news were received immediately and also video of live events about the situation.

In conclusion, while social media platforms has enhanced the availability of news by making it free, it is also the fastest means of spreading information all over the globe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the essay structure is slightly contradictory; the introduction states the essay will 'discuss both views,' but the body paragraphs only support the 'agree' side. This creates a disconnect between the plan and the execution. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat repetitive, focusing heavily on the speed and cost of social media without exploring the counter-argument or the nuance of why some might still prefer physical books or newspapers. To reach a higher band, you should ensure your essay structure matches your introduction and provide a more balanced exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'news to be pretended' in the second paragraph, which is confusing. The conclusion is also quite abrupt and fails to synthesize the arguments effectively, merely repeating the points made earlier. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the conclusion provides a summary of the main arguments rather than just a restatement would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'news to be pretended' and 'end scars in Nigeria,' which seem to be a misinterpretation or a typo for 'EndSARS.' The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic terms like 'good smartphone' and 'stable network.' To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, such as 'instantaneous access' instead of 'fastest means' or 'digital dissemination' instead of 'spreading information.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, subject-verb agreement issues are present, such as 'social media platforms has accounted' (should be 'have accounted') and 'all the information individuals needs' (should be 'need'). Additionally, there are errors in article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'during the period of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.' While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage would be highly beneficial.
