IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Printed newspapers and magazines will be no longer needed in the future, as these are available on the internet free. I strongly agree with this statement because it is convenient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly option.

Firstly, it has become easier to access everything on internet in free or at minimal cost without going anywhere. People can find the material they want to read without going any library, book or shop. In addition, it takes a lot of time to search relevant material manually, such as in library. We need to identify relevant catalog number, book section, and desired content in the resource material. However, online resources are cheap, convenient, and save time.

Secondly, due to growing environmental issues and climate change, people are concerned about the use of paper for the printing magazines and books. For instance, trees help in reducing environmental pollution and lowering atmospheric temperature. Every year a lot of trees are cut to make papers for printing, which is responsible for deforestation all over the world. That is why, we are facing increase emission of gases, melting of glaciers, and natural disasters like floods. Moreover, the old versions of printed books are not useful for anyone, as there are new inventions and updates every day, and people want to read the latest versions. In this way, a lot of printed books are wasted regularly.

On the other hand, reading online material can cause eye strain, interruption and distraction by advertisements. I believe, considering the environmental issues, ease of access, conservation of time and money, people will choose to read online rather than the printed books or magazines in the future.

In conclusion, accessing and reading the material on internet has more benefits than the printed books in terms of saving money, time, and natural resources used to make paper.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding convenience, cost, and environmental impact. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the environmental argument is well-supported, the discussion on the 'free' nature of online content is slightly over-generalized, as many high-quality digital resources require subscriptions. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments acknowledge the complexity of the topic, perhaps by briefly addressing the counter-argument more deeply before refuting it, rather than just listing benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the environmental impact and the obsolescence of printed books in the second body paragraph could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring that each paragraph has a single, clear focus would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'deforestation', 'atmospheric temperature', and 'environmental pollution' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in free' instead of 'for free' and 'the printing magazines' instead of 'printing magazines'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'relevant material' or 'printed books'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'will be no longer needed' (should be 'will no longer be needed'), 'without going any library' (missing preposition 'to'), and 'increase emission' (should be 'increased emissions'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with greater accuracy.
