IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I firmly subscribe to the view that in the future no one prefer buying newspapers or book because everyone prefer to read everything online without purchasing anything and i think in future social media will be more advance so that's why everyone prefer reading online rather purchasing books or printers.

The most persuasive argument in favor of this view is that online reading is a good thing .Its help us to read without any tension about purchasing . Moreover ,another good thing is that we can read any book without purchasing and can read in a one time and we can find every kind of book without going to library .

A further point worthy of consideration is that online reading is good but i think physical reading is more important because it engages us to fully concentrate and we can easily read in any time or any place and we also don't need internet .

In addition, i totally disagree of this view because many people in the future prefer read books physically but rest of people also read books online .I think its depend on people choices they want read physically or online.

Accordingly, I remain fully convinced that online reading is a good but physically reading is more important . In future online reading are more common due to individuals mostly prefer reading online because it is easy to read and we don't carry any book or buy anything. And I think it is a best way due to now young generation mostly prefer read online rather than physically.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt but lacks depth in argumentation. While you state your position, the ideas are repetitive and lack specific examples or logical development. For instance, you mention that online reading is 'a good thing' without explaining why or how it impacts the industry. The conclusion contradicts the introduction, as you initially agree that no one will buy books, but later argue that people will still prefer physical books. To improve, ensure your position is consistent and provide well-supported arguments that explore the implications of digital versus physical media rather than simply stating personal preferences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is weak. Transitions are often mechanical or misused, such as 'Accordingly' at the start of the final paragraph, which does not logically follow the previous point. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas is disjointed. For example, the transition between the benefits of online reading and the importance of physical books is abrupt. Using a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea would significantly improve the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'good', 'read', and 'purchasing'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or an awareness of collocation. Phrases like 'read in a one time' are unnatural and imprecise. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'digital accessibility', 'tangible media', 'convenience', or 'literary consumption'. Additionally, avoid repeating the same words in close proximity, as this makes the writing feel simplistic and reduces the impact of your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'everyone prefer', 'online reading are'), missing articles, and awkward sentence structures. The use of punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces missing before commas. While you attempt some complex sentences, they are often marred by errors that occasionally impede the flow of meaning. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles ('a', 'the') and pluralisation. Increasing your control over simple structures is a necessary step before attempting more complex ones.
