IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Newspaper is a basic need of every home now a days. With the help of newspapers, we are notified to any happy news or bad news every day. But the value newspaper is decreasing now a days because of technology. I agree a lot that in future printed newspaper are left no more important like now.

Newspapers are very important thing in our lives. Our lives are valueless without newspaper. Newspapers are printed daily according to the exact need of peoples.

They are printed daily and are provided daily to people home .People read it and get notified of the daily update. they know all about our country and people. No doubt, it is a right way of notifying people but slowly peoples are moving towards technology. They prefer softcopy of newspaper than hardcopy. They are now able to read online all about their country and world. They did not wait for the delivery of newspaper, they just read online without paying. It also takes less time. People can read it any time and any where.

Reading printed newspaper is also a grate way, it can also run the home of a needy people. It also maintains the piece, love, and kindness among the people. Online people are only able to read it they cannot talk to another about daily life.

To conclude, in future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying, but we also have to adopt old traditions to give love, peace and kindness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt but lacks depth in its argumentation. While you state your agreement, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and simplistic. For instance, the argument that newspapers 'run the home of a needy people' is unclear and lacks logical connection to the main topic of digital versus print media. The conclusion repeats the prompt rather than synthesising your arguments. To improve, you should focus on providing specific examples or logical reasoning to support your position, such as discussing the environmental impact of paper or the accessibility of information, rather than relying on general statements about 'love and kindness'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. Transitions between sentences are often mechanical or missing, making the flow feel disjointed. For example, the jump from discussing online news to the 'grate way' of printed newspapers lacks a clear cohesive link. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the use of 'they' in the second paragraph, which does not clearly refer back to a specific noun. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'on the other hand') would help guide the reader through your arguments more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the impact of your writing. You frequently use simple words like 'important', 'good', and 'daily'. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'grate' instead of 'great', 'peoples' (when 'people' is already plural), and 'piece' instead of 'peace'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary and collocations. For example, instead of saying 'notified to any happy news', you could use 'informed about current events'. Focus on learning word families and checking your spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they often contain errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'Newspaper is a basic need', 'provided daily to people home'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. To improve, you should practice using a wider range of complex structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, and pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules like pluralisation and the correct use of articles.
