IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that people will be able to read everything online without any cost, so they will not purchase printed newspaper or books in the modern future. I partially agree with the statement because both views have their own advantages and this essay will discuss why I slightly agree with the statement and its reasons.

Admittedly, In the future, the majority of people will not buy printed books and newspapers, because people have many options to get information or read books online now, and these options are convenient as people can read anything just in a couple of seconds and get knowledge about something. The major benefit of digital books and newspapers is that they are free of cost and that is important aspect of people will prefer them to read or acquire any information rather than spending money on printed ones.

Nevertheless, printed newspapers and books have their own advantages that could save their value in a modern era. Printed books and newspapers are beneficial in order to lower impact on our eyesight and mental well-being while reading continuously rather than reading on screen. Another benefit is that reading from printed books can help people to memorize information for the long time and they can use that knowledge later where needed. For example, one research confirmed that students remembered more information which they get from printed books than online materials.

In conclusion, I partially agree with the statement because I believe both arguments are good in their way. Although digital newspapers and books are free and easy to use, printed books can provide better and long lasted information with better health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the shift toward digital media and the enduring value of printed materials. You maintain a clear position throughout, although the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding 'mental well-being' and 'memorization' is relevant but could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The introduction is a bit repetitive in stating your position, and the conclusion simply restates the points rather than synthesizing them into a final thought. To improve, focus on providing more detailed explanations for your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'Another benefit', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in your argument. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'printed newspapers and books' is repeated frequently. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms like 'these physical formats') would make the text flow more naturally. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'convenient', 'mental well-being', and 'acquire'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, and there are minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'get knowledge about something' or 'long lasted information'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the same nouns. Using a wider variety of synonyms for 'printed books' and 'online materials' would also enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'one research confirmed' should be 'research has confirmed' (as research is uncountable), and 'long time' should be 'long term'. Additionally, there are some awkward phrasings like 'that is important aspect of people will prefer them'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a greater focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage.
