IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In upcoming future, nobody will purchase printed newspapers or books because they will have free access to reading everything they desire. I agree to large extent with this statement and I shall provide my reasoning along with a conclusion.

To begin with, due to technological advancements, residents around the globe are connected with each other via internet. Any news development happening in United States can be accessed by Pakistanis in real time. A large proportion of news channels have social media accounts where they share live news with public free of cost. For instance, my friend can quickly read statements of President Trump because he is an avid user of social media. Furthermore, numerous news outlets have future plans to release mobile applications which will share the news in form of notifications. It indicates that people will have access to free news similar to Whatsapp messages.

Moreover, nowadays, individuals can find a wide range of free books on internet in PDF format. They can be read on a computer, a mobile phone or a tablet without needing to install any third party software which makes it convenient for the regular readers. As an example, my cousin recently downloaded a book titled Why We Get Sick by Doctor Benjamin Bikman without paying a penny. Moreover, many authors disclosed their upcoming plans to share their old books free of cost on social media in exchange for emails where they can send news of their upcoming books.

In contrast, senior citizens argue that physical newspapers or books are a great source of knowledge. They argue that buying the physical copies will be beneficial for population who wear glasses. Their argument has some merit but due to social media and mobile apps, the general public will read the news or books without any charges which provides the same level of knowledge as physical copies. Moreover, there is no credible scientific research which claims that people with glasses should only buy printed copies.

In conclusion, although the physical newspapers or books are preferred by elderly people, it doesn't mean the majority of citizens will follow their footsteps. In future, the general public will be inclined to reading news and books without paying any fee.
