IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the coming future, buying printed newspapers or books would be outdated because everything would be available to be read online without paying. I strongly agree to this statement because of the availability and no cost factors. But, at the same time, I also feel that this trend would never be gone because of the comfort one is habitual to.

To begin with, the first most obvious factor is availability. Nowadays, everything is available online to read through websites, blogs or social media and will continue to be consumed. For example, a person doesn't need to wait for tomorrow's newspaper to read articles because they are instantly available online. Similarly, thousands of books are already available on websites as pdfs for reading.

The second most obvious factor is no cost. For reading a printed newspaper or book, you need to purchase first. In contrast, news articles are available free of cost for consumption online. In addition, numerous free books can also be found on websites for public use. Not all are free, but considering the tilt towards online consumption of books, a person wouldn't need to pay for access in the future. For example, the Harry Potter Novels are freely accessible online and no need to pay for their printed versions.

To conclude, a vast majority is highly expected to opt for online versions of newspapers or books, considering the above factors. But, one who is addicted to reading printed newspapers or finding comfort in reading printed books, is probably going to continue doing so. For example, if a person uses highlighter or bookmarks to mark important points and that's his comfort, then he is unlikely to give that up.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that acknowledges both the shift toward digital media and the enduring appeal of physical formats. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of Harry Potter novels and the use of highlighters. However, the development is somewhat simplistic; the argument could be strengthened by exploring the nuance of 'free' content versus copyright issues or the quality of digital versus physical reading experiences. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion could be more robust in synthesizing the two sides of the argument rather than simply restating them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In contrast', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. For instance, the link between the second body paragraph and the conclusion could be smoother to better reflect the complexity of the prompt. Overall, the flow of ideas is easy to follow and the progression is logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'consumption', 'outdated', and 'accessible'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic words like 'available' and 'read'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to digital technology and publishing trends. Some word choices, such as 'tilt towards', are used correctly but could be more formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'I strongly agree to this statement' (should be 'with'), 'this trend would never be gone' (should be 'disappear'), and 'no need to pay' (missing subject/verb). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are minor slips in article usage and prepositional phrases. The control of grammar is sufficient to communicate effectively, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score.
