IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is frequently argued that people will not purchase printed magazines or books because of their availability on digital platforms. While some people disagree with this notion, I completely agree with this perspective because of its convenience and easy access to information. This essay will examine the main reasons behind my opinion.

To begin with, one of the main reasons why I agree with this view is that digital platforms provide easy access to data. This is primarily because individuals can read information and acquire knowledge from different platforms globally. In other words, they just need a smartphone and internet package to get up-to-date information. For instance, students can attend online classes, get educational resources and other useful materials to enhance their knowledge. Therefore, this argument strongly supports my viewpoint.

Another notable point for my agreement is that it provides convenience to citizens. This is mainly because they do not need to go to the market and spend money on these materials. As a result, this can save their time by providing every information through social media platforms and websites. For example, students can read articles and magazines on websites and apps without buying expensive hard books or printed newspapers. Thus, this makes my argument particularly convincing.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that individuals will not be interested in purchasing newspapers and books in the future because every information is now available online on various websites or platforms and it also provides convenience by saving their time and money. Overall, this approach is likely to bring greater long-term benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding convenience and accessibility are relevant and logically developed. However, the essay tends to over-generalize by assuming that all printed media will disappear, without acknowledging counter-arguments or the nuance of why some people still prefer physical books (e.g., tactile experience, eye strain). While the ideas are supported, they could be extended further by exploring the economic impact on publishers or the digital divide. The position is consistent, but the depth of analysis is somewhat limited, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, such as 'To begin with, one of the main reasons...' and 'Another notable point...'. Cohesive devices are used, though they are sometimes a bit mechanical (e.g., 'To begin with', 'As a result', 'Thus'). The progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. To improve, the student should aim for more varied and sophisticated linking phrases to ensure the flow between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'digital platforms', 'educational resources', and 'up-to-date information'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly with words like 'information' and 'platforms'. There are no significant spelling errors, but the lexical choices lack the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Using more varied synonyms and collocations would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate and communication is never impeded, there are some minor errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'every information is now available' (information is an uncountable noun and should be 'all information' or 'every piece of information'). The control of punctuation is generally good, but the range of complex structures is somewhat restricted. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of subordinate clauses and more advanced grammatical structures with greater consistency.
