IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In an age increasingly shaped by globalization, technology and economic change. Many people now believe that in the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books. Because they will be able to read everything they went online without paying. I strongly agree with this view, the following paragraph set out my reasoning before reaching a clear conclusion.

The first reason for my agreement is that in upcoming days world is most advance. A Person stays in homeland country and reads book and laws in the other country by helps internet. For example, in some platforms have everything all books, newspapers, tests, novels, Islamic and laws books, and this platform is googled. In addition, the concept of nano degrees is well proven. It will happen only when the concept of E-library is in hand of the people which further illustrates this point.

A second equally important consideration is that in the world each and everything is online. In some countries provide study online platforms online classes. As a result, few people buy online newspaper, books, and purchase the product sit in home and through delivery. This point alone would be enough to justify my position, but it is reinforced by the fact that in very country tickets like train, bus, airplane and cinema tickets booked online.

In conclusion, having considered peoples everything read online without paying, this benefit is news, books and everything is updated in few seconds, everywhere, every time read in the mobile phone, I am convinced that the reasoning outline above provides strong support for my position.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of ideas is limited and often unclear. While you mention the convenience of online access, the arguments lack depth and logical progression. For instance, the mention of 'nano degrees' and 'Islamic books' is tangential and does not directly support the claim that printed media will vanish because of free online access. The argument is repetitive, and the connection between the examples provided (like booking train tickets) and the core topic of reading books/newspapers is weak. To improve, focus on providing specific, relevant reasons why printed media might become obsolete, such as environmental concerns or the rapid pace of digital information updates.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and a lack of logical transitions. While you use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'In conclusion', they are often used mechanically or to connect ideas that do not logically follow one another. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow your line of reasoning. For example, the transition between the concept of 'nano degrees' and 'E-libraries' is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive, which restricts your ability to express complex ideas. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'in upcoming days world is most advance' and 'googled' used as a noun. You rely on basic vocabulary, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or an awareness of style. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to technology and media, and practice using synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'everything' and 'online' throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, including sentence fragments (e.g., 'In an age increasingly shaped by globalization, technology and economic change.') and incorrect verb forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with commas often used incorrectly or omitted where needed. While you attempt some complex structures, they are frequently faulty, leading to confusion. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction—ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb—before attempting more complex grammatical forms. Proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage is also essential.
