IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, more and more people are choosing to read newspapers and books online instead of buying printed copies. Some people believe that in the future, nobody will purchase printed newspapers or books because everything will be available online for free. I partly agree with this statement because online reading is becoming increasingly popular, but I believe printed materials will still have a place in society.
One major reason why people may stop buying printed newspapers and books is convenience. People can use their phones, tablets or laptops to access information almost instantly. For example, instead of going to a shop to buy a newspaper, a person can simply search for the latest news online. Furthermore, many websites provide articles and other information free of charge. This makes online reading cheaper and more convenient, especially for students and young people.
However, I do not believe that printed books and newspapers will completely disappear. Many people still enjoy the experience of reading a physical book because it allows them to concentrate without being distracted by notifications or social media. Printed books can also be easier on the eyes compared with looking at a screen for several hours. In addition, it is unlikely that everything online will be available for free. Many newspapers and digital book services already require users to pay for subscriptions or individual books.
In conclusion, I agree that online reading will continue to become more common because it is convenient and often cheaper. Nevertheless, I disagree that nobody will buy printed newspapers or books in the future. There will still be people who prefer physical copies, and online content may not always be available without payment.
