IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
the future, printed newspapers and books may become less popular because people can access a huge amount of information online. Although I agree that online reading will become increasingly common, I do not completely agree that printed newspapers and books will disappear.
There are several reasons why people prefer online sources. First, the internet is fast and convenient. People can read news, articles and books on their smartphones, tablets or laptops from almost anywhere. In addition, many websites provide free information, which is particularly useful for students and people who cannot afford to buy printed materials. For example, students can download educational articles and read them online without spending money on books.
However, printed newspapers and books still have some important advantages. Many people enjoy reading physical books because they are easier on the eyes and do not require an electronic device or an internet connection. Furthermore, printed books can provide a better reading experience because readers are less likely to be distracted by social media, messages or advertisements. Libraries and schools also continue to use printed books for education and research.
Another important point is that not everything online is free. Some high-quality newspapers, academic journals and books require subscriptions or payments. Therefore, the idea that people will be able to read everything online without paying is not completely realistic.
In conclusion, I believe that online reading will become more popular and may reduce the demand for printed newspapers and books. Nevertheless, I disagree that printed materials will completely disappear because they offer unique benefits and many people still prefer them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that acknowledges the rise of digital media while arguing against the total disappearance of print. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the distinction between convenience and the physical reading experience. The argument regarding the cost of online content is a strong, logical point that directly challenges the prompt's premise. The response is balanced, and the conclusion effectively synthesises the main points. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion by exploring the cultural or historical significance of physical books, which would add more depth to your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the advantages of online reading and the benefits of physical books is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to link your arguments effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, making the essay easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'increasingly common', 'electronic device', and 'unique benefits' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for an academic task, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. The word choice is consistently accurate, and there are no spelling errors. To improve, try incorporating more topic-specific collocations or nuanced academic vocabulary related to digital media and publishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional structures and relative clauses effectively, such as 'people who cannot afford to buy printed materials' and 'readers are less likely to be distracted'. The punctuation is accurate, and the sentence construction is generally error-free. The majority of your sentences are clear and well-formed. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as inversion or more advanced passive constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
