IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that printed newspapers or books become completely obsolete in the future because people will be able to access all the information they need online. I do not believe that newspapers and books will disappear entirely, because many people still prefer reading printed materials and value the physical experience of reading.

One major reason why online content is becoming more popular is its accessibility and convenience. People can read news articles, academic materials and books instantly on their smartphones or computers without having to purchase a physical copy. Moreover, digital platforms and apps allow users to access a much wider range of information instantly. For instance, many newspapers now publish their articles online. As a result, the demand for books and newspapers is likely to decrease.

However, I believe printed books will continue to have a place in society. Many people still prefer reading physical books because they find them more comfortable and less distracting. Furthermore, printed books can be collected, given as a gift and kept for many years as a historical value. Some readers also argue that reading from paper is more convenient. It is allows them to concentrate better and reduces the eye strain associated with prolonged screen use.

In conclusion, I agree that that the popularity of printed newspapers and books will be more common. Nevertheless, I disagree with the idea that nobody in future will buy printed materials, because many people will continue to value the convenience and value of physical books.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that acknowledges the convenience of online content while defending the continued relevance of physical media. Your ideas are relevant and logically structured. However, the development of your arguments could be more nuanced. For instance, you mention that digital platforms allow for a 'wider range of information,' but you could expand on why this specifically threatens the print industry. Similarly, your point about physical books being 'collected' is a strong argument that could be further supported with a brief example of the sentimental or aesthetic value of home libraries. Overall, you have met the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'For instance,' 'However,' and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas effectively. The progression of your argument is easy to follow. One minor area for improvement is the use of referencing; in the final paragraph, the phrase 'the popularity of printed newspapers and books will be more common' is slightly confusing in context, as it contradicts your earlier point about them becoming obsolete. Ensuring that your concluding summary aligns perfectly with your body paragraphs will help improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'completely obsolete,' 'physical experience,' and 'prolonged screen use' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices could be more sophisticated. For example, you repeat the word 'value' twice in the final sentence, which limits the lexical variety. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise synonyms or collocations, such as 'tangible benefits' or 'digital proliferation,' to enhance the academic tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'It is allows them to concentrate' (should be 'It allows') and 'I agree that that the popularity' (repetition of 'that'). Additionally, the opening sentence 'printed newspapers or books become' would be more accurate as 'printed newspapers or books will become.' Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help elevate your score.
