IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been suggested that in future people will stop paying to buy books or printed newspapers as everything will be available online for free of cost. I completely agree that printing newspapers or books will be replaced by online reading platforms.

The most compelling argument in favour of this is that online reading provides flexibility. This is largely due to the fact that technology is evolving and so every individual also needs to evolve. Online reading platform not only save money but also provides flexibility. It makes it easier to manage and reduce maintenance. A clear example of this can be seen here if a person is travelling, then he or she does not need to carry physical copy of book or any reading material. They can use their phone or any other electronical device for reading which helps in saving money, space in bag and most importantly saves paper, which results in less cutting of trees eventually protect environment.

Admittedly, it is true that everybody cannot afford online reading as people in rural areas do not have access to device or access to internet, so it is important to sustain the process of printing newspapers and books so that everybody can read. This helps to reduce the reading gap between rich and poor people . Furthermore it maintains equality amongst people. For instance, there is a poor family living and only one adult has access to electronic device, so if a child wants to read a book, it is not possible for him or her to read without the device. Therefore, it is very important to make sure we preserve the tradition of printed newspapers or books.

In conclusion, I am firmly of the opinion that in future, everyone would be relying on online reading platforms at they provides flexibility, portability, and save cost, however, it is important to preserve tradition of printing books, and newspapers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that acknowledges the benefits of online reading while highlighting the necessity of maintaining printed media for accessibility. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, particularly the argument regarding environmental impact and the digital divide. However, the essay contains a slight contradiction: the introduction states a complete agreement that printed media will be replaced, yet the body paragraphs and conclusion argue for the importance of preserving it. This inconsistency weakens the overall clarity of the position. To reach a higher band, ensure that the thesis statement aligns perfectly with the nuanced arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'The most compelling argument', 'Admittedly', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For instance, the use of 'this' to refer to broad concepts could be more precise. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the shift between the benefits of online reading and the need for printed books could be managed with more sophisticated linking phrases to better integrate the opposing viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use less common items such as 'compelling', 'sustain', and 'portability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'electronical device' (should be 'electronic device') and 'less cutting of trees' (which is awkward phrasing). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise academic vocabulary would elevate the response. The repetition of basic terms like 'reading' and 'books' could be mitigated by using synonyms or more varied descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'Online reading platform not only save money' (should be 'platforms... save') and 'as they provides' (should be 'as they provide'). Additionally, there are missing articles, such as 'carry physical copy of book' (should be 'a physical copy of a book'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on accuracy would be beneficial.
