IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is predicted that there will be low sales in newspapers or books because online materials will be free to access. I firmly agree with this view because technology has made reading convenient and affordable.
To begin with, studying online is very convenient. This is because many people can have access to up-to-date materials from the comfort of their homes, without visiting book stores or libraries. They could research on vocabularies relating to the topics which they have read. Hence, giving them broader academic knowledge. For example, in most developed countries like the United Kingdom, students may find it easier to read online due to how efficient and comprehensible it can be. With this trends now, it may be difficult to purchase books or magazines from physical stores, as everything is digitalized and requires less efforts to perform. This means that, students are able to learn from different perspective. As a result, they may excel exceptionally in their academic performances.
Furthermore, reading articles on the internet is quiet affordable due to some individuals may not need to break a bank, in order to study., instead the money maybe allocated to a different basic need. To illustrate this, many people who stay in Lagos tend to save funds meant for buying articles because some book shops are permanently closed due to low sales and this would prompt individuals to learn from the internet. Consequently this may lead to financial security.
In conclusion, it has been projected that bookstores will have limited sales because individuals are studying online. I firmly agree with this statement because it is convenient and cost-effective.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding convenience and cost-effectiveness are relevant and supported with examples. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, and the analysis could be more nuanced. For instance, the claim that 'nobody will buy' printed materials is a strong absolute that could have been challenged or explored more deeply to reach a higher band. The ideas are generally well-extended, but the reasoning occasionally relies on generalizations, such as the assumption that all physical bookstores are closing due to low sales.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Consequently,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is a bit disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the link between 'research on vocabularies' and 'academic performance' feels slightly forced. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common items like 'digitalized,' 'financial security,' and 'cost-effective.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'research on vocabularies' (should be 'research vocabulary') and 'quiet affordable' (should be 'quite'). The phrase 'break a bank' is also used incorrectly; the idiom is 'break the bank.' These errors do not impede communication but prevent the essay from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'With this trends now' (should be 'With these trends'), 'less efforts' (should be 'less effort'), and 'due to some individuals may not need' (should be 'because some individuals do not need'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage after introductory phrases and before conjunctions. Despite these errors, the meaning is consistently clear, and the errors do not significantly impede the reader's understanding.
