IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undeniable that, the traditional way of reading news or books is going to be substituted by a modern one where people will get the information they want for free. In regards, some individuals don't believe that this would be the case since even now not all the valuable material is available to the general public and you have to purchase e-books. I agree up to large extent with this notion due to many reasons which will outline in forthcoming fragments with a logical conclusion.

To commence with, Firstly, many people, particularly young adults have already opted for new cutting-edge technology that has revolutionized the press and book publishing since it becomes easier to get the desired material without the need to pay. Secondly, electronic news or e-books are the trends and soon it will take off that everybody will give up on the old methods. For example, adults who used to look for work offers in journals will prefer searching on the internet since it provides more selections, as for science books that are available for students for free in PDF format. Moreover, it is forecast that no one will purchase printed newspapers and books; however, I hold that their replacement is unlikely to happen.

However, despite the significant decrease in newspaper and book sales, they are still deemed as a trusty reference of knowledge and news compared to those found on the internet for free. For instance, students will mostly rely on library books to work on their thesis instead of unknown online sources of information. In addition, not all E-books are available for the general public and often only an abstract is found, and when they are, it is because the content has been pirated which is neither right nor fair to the authors and publishers. Consequently, I recommend that new policies that protect the work owners would be introduced which even support more uniqueness of printed journals and books.

In conclusion, I could agree with the prediction of decreasing numbers for newspapers and , because they should provide the most recent information and updates, and it is not possible to compete with the Internet in this. But on the other hand, I cannot say the same for books. People love returning to their most-liked or treasured stories, spending time with a physical copy of them, and maybe book lovers just find comfort in having their loved novels on a shelf. For this reason, I would strongly disagree with the idea of a total abandonment of hardcovers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You address all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that balances the decline of newspapers with the enduring value of books. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, particularly in the second half of the essay. However, the development in the second paragraph is slightly contradictory; you argue that people will give up on old methods, but then immediately state that replacement is unlikely. To improve, ensure your arguments are consistent throughout the essay. The introduction is a bit wordy and contains some awkward phrasing, but your overall stance remains clear and is maintained until the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as the repetitive use of 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' within the same paragraph. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, in the second paragraph, it is not always certain what 'it' refers to. Improving the flow between sentences would help the essay move more naturally and elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'cutting-edge technology', 'revolutionized', and 'abandonment'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'trusty reference of knowledge' (better: 'reliable source of information') and 'support more uniqueness' (better: 'promote the distinct value'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some word choices are imprecise. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations that sound more natural to native speakers and ensure that your vocabulary is used with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I agree up to large extent' (missing article: 'to a large extent'), 'which will outline' (missing subject: 'which I will outline'), and 'new policies that protect the work owners would be introduced' (tense/modal usage: 'should be introduced'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some unnecessary commas, such as after 'undeniable that,'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
