IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that online availability of information will result in selling of printed newspaper. Although, technology is improving drastically, I only agree up to some extent with this particular notion due to further mentioned points and facts.

Online news reading has its own various benefits. Firstly, a huge amount of news is available at internet and at its applications which keep updating the information due to which, it allows people to read the news without facing any difficulty as they can access the news anytime and anywhere with just internet connection without waiting for physical copy of the newspaper. Secondly, online newspaper reading serves as a cheap but effective alternative as a individual can read as much news he wants without any charges on many types of websites.

However, even in this modern era, there are number of people who like to read newspapers to gather news because they find it easy and comfortable than online reading as looking on screen for a very long time will result in strain on eyes which in newspapers is not the case. Moreover, newspapers are the most reliable source of information as they do not need any source like batteries, electricity to operate due to which they can be used in every condition unlike the online alternatives. Furthermore, newspapers have been among residents for a very long time due to which people have sentimental values for them and collectors also like to collect newspapers to display them or to just keep them as a memory.

To conclude, although technological improvement has made online news reading a good alternative but I believe that it will not be possible for newspapers to just disappear as stated in the aforementioned reasonable points and facts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the rise of online media and the enduring appeal of printed materials. You maintain a clear position throughout, arguing that physical media will not disappear. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'sentimental values' is a good point, but it could be expanded with more depth regarding the cultural or tactile experience of reading. The response covers all parts of the task, but the arguments remain at a somewhat general level, preventing it from reaching the higher bands where more nuanced exploration is expected.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your arguments. While these devices are effective, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother, as some sentences feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive flow of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'drastically', 'alternative', 'reliable', and 'sentimental values'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'available at internet' (should be 'on the internet') and 'as a individual' (should be 'an individual'). While you successfully communicate your ideas, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'due to which, it allows' is a slightly awkward construction, and there are missing articles (e.g., 'at internet', 'in newspapers'). You also have some issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching the 7.0 band, which requires more frequent error-free sentences and better control over complex structures.
