IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is undeniable that books and newspapers plays a great role in providing knowledge about the surroundings . To regard this, in the upcoming years nobody will tends to carry newspapers or books because they seek it online without any cost.I agree to a large extent with this notion due to many reasons which will be outline in forthcoming fragments with logical conclusion.
To begin with, studying online is very convenient. This is because many people can have access to up-to-date materials from the comfort of their homes, without visiting book stores or libraries. They could research on vocabularies relating to the topics which they have read. Hence, giving them broader academic knowledge. For example, in most developed countries like the United Kingdom, students may find it easier to read online due to how efficient and comprehensible it can be. With this trends now, it may be difficult to purchase books or magazines from physical stores, as everything is digitalized and requires less efforts to perform. This means that, students are able to learn from different perspective. As a result, they may excel exceptionally in their academic performances.
Furthermore, reading articles on the internet is quiet affordable due to some individuals may not need to break a bank, in order to study.. instead the money maybe allocated to a different basic need. To illustrate this, many people who stay in Lagos tend to save funds meant for buying articles because some book shops are permanently closed due to low sales and this would prompt individuals to learn from the internet. Consequently this may lead to financial security of saving.
To conclude, although there are several benefits of this notion such as budget friendly , easy to carry et cetera yet importance of paper books and newspapers can never be neglected at any cost.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt, but the development of ideas is inconsistent. While you state your position clearly in the introduction, the supporting arguments in the body paragraphs are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the argument regarding 'convenience' is well-introduced, but the explanation about 'researching vocabularies' is vague. Furthermore, the conclusion contradicts your earlier stance by stating that the importance of paper books 'can never be neglected,' which weakens the clarity of your overall position. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a distinct, well-supported reason that consistently aligns with your stated thesis throughout the entire essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Consequently.' However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'To regard this' in the introduction, which does not function correctly as a transition. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the logical progression within the paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, which occasionally forces the reader to re-read to grasp the intended meaning.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. You use some basic collocations like 'break a bank' and 'academic performances,' but there are instances of word-choice errors, such as 'forthcoming fragments' instead of 'subsequent paragraphs' or 'research on vocabularies' instead of 'researching vocabulary.' There is also a reliance on simple, repetitive language. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology related to the topic of digital versus print media, while ensuring that words are used in their correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede fluency. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'books and newspapers plays,' 'nobody will tends') and incorrect article usage or prepositional phrases (e.g., 'due to some individuals may not need'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences containing unnecessary spaces before periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor mechanical errors would significantly improve your score.
