Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt, but the development is significantly hampered by the fact that the entire essay is repeated twice. This repetition suggests a lack of planning and control. While the student takes a clear position, the arguments are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. The ideas regarding the benefits of online versus printed media are relevant, but the supporting examples are simplistic. To improve, the student should focus on developing a single, cohesive argument without redundant content and ensure that the ideas are fully explored rather than just stated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The structure is severely compromised by the repetition of the entire text. While there is an attempt at paragraphing and the use of basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion', the overall flow is disrupted by the duplicated content. The progression of ideas is not logical because the reader is forced to read the same information twice. To achieve a higher score, the student must ensure that each paragraph contributes uniquely to the argument and that cohesive devices are used to link distinct ideas rather than just marking the start of a repeated section.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'spread its wings' and 'forthcoming fragment' are either clichéd or misused in this context. There are frequent errors in word choice, such as 'gadget' (used as a countable noun without an article) and 'online programming' (used incorrectly to refer to online content). While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is not sufficient to express complex ideas with precision. Improving lexical range requires learning collocations and using more academic, precise terminology rather than relying on basic, often misused, phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammar is characterized by frequent errors that often impede clarity. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('internet was cheaper', 'books was only written'), article usage, and tense consistency ('they gone irritate'). The sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting complexity. Punctuation is also inconsistent. The repetition of the text also highlights these grammatical errors, making them more noticeable. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that tenses are used correctly throughout the essay.
