IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the future no one is going to purchase newspaper,

novels or books the reason to that is everything will be easily accessible online without spending any money.

This has become widely discussed topic in modern society. Why i am certain that this is not beneficial for individuals this will be deliberated in this essays.

To commence with the advantages individuals can have an easy access to almost every book in addition they can read and learn about whatever they want. There is no need for going to neither a library or book store. For instance an individual can get a book online without going to a library and he does not have to spend their precious money.

However there a few disadvantages of this is but lets start with the lack of focus and loss of cognitive and critical thinking for instance when a person is reading a books and all of a sudden a notification of some advertisement brand promotion pops up on his screen he gets distracted. According to evidences it is certain that it takes twenty minutes for an individual to focus again this is how he lose focus. It effects cognitive thinking of a person such as a person is not getting a concept and instead of opening a book he just goes to internet and search it. Now he neither opened a book or researched on it as a result he started trusting social media now he is fully dependent on internet.

In conclusion as far as I am concerned individuals should use physical books rather then wasting time on their smart phones and distracting again and again risking their analytical abilities

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response presents a clear argument against the idea that printed media will disappear, but it does not fully explore both sides of the debate as required by the task. While it mentions advantages and disadvantages, the points are not well-developed, and the lack of coherent structure can hinder the clarity of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The organization of ideas is somewhat confused. While the introduction sets the stage, the transition between points lacks clarity, especially when switching from advantages to disadvantages. Use of linking words would improve flow. Additionally, sentences at times feel abrupt, weakening coherence. A clearer outline and logical progression could transition ideas more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource shows some variation, but a few words are used inaccurately, such as 'the reason to that is' instead of 'the reason for this is.' Some vocabulary choices are basic and repetitive, such as 'individual' used multiple times. More precise and varied vocabulary would enhance the writing. Phrases like 'precious money' could be replaced with 'valuable resources' for a more academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Grammatical accuracy is hindered by several errors, such as incorrect verb forms and sentence structures. For example, 'this will be deliberated in this essays' is incorrect (it should be 'essay') and inconsistent agreement between subjects and verbs. Additionally, issues like run-on sentences and missing articles detract from clarity. Improving sentence variety and accuracy will enhance communication and overall effectiveness.

Overall feedback

You have presented a compelling argument about the potential drawbacks of relying on digital media, which is a relevant perspective. Strengths include the ability to articulate your opinion. However, focus on developing a balanced view by presenting stronger arguments for both sides of the debate. Improve your use of linking phrases to guide readers through your points more clearly and ensure your ideas are fully explained. Additionally, work on grammatical accuracy and using a broader range of vocabulary to elevate the sophistication of your writing.
