IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the future no one is going to purchase newspaper,

novels or books the reason to that is everything will be easily accessible online without spending any money.

This has become widely discussed topic in modern society. Why i am certain that this is not beneficial for individuals this will be deliberated in this essays.

To commence with the advantages individuals can have an easy access to almost every book in addition they can read and learn about whatever they want. There is no need for going to neither a library or book store. For instance an individual can get a book online without going to a library and he does not have to spend their precious money.

However there a few disadvantages of this is but lets start with the lack of focus and loss of cognitive and critical thinking for instance when a person is reading a books and all of a sudden a notification of some advertisement brand promotion pops up on his screen he gets distracted. According to evidences it is certain that it takes twenty minutes for an individual to focus again this is how he lose focus. It effects cognitive thinking of a person such as a person is not getting a concept and instead of opening a book he just goes to internet and search it. Now he neither opened a book or researched on it as a result he started trusting social media now he is fully dependent on internet.

In conclusion as far as I am concerned individuals should use physical books rather then wasting time on their smart phones and distracting again and again risking their analytical abilities

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The essay addresses the question but fails to provide a clear thesis statement and structured argument, which undermines its effectiveness. While the writer presents some valid points about the convenience of online reading and the drawbacks associated with it, the conclusion lacks a strong summary of their position. Additionally, points made are somewhat unbalanced, focusing narrowly on the impact on cognitive skills without adequately exploring the broader implications of the statement. As a result, the task achievement is somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

Coherence and cohesion are inconsistent throughout the essay. The opening sentence lacks clear structure and transitions between ideas are often weak, as seen in phrases like "However there a few disadvantages of this is" which is poorly constructed. Additionally, the essay does not effectively use linking words or cohesive devices, making it difficult to follow the argument's progression. Paragraphs could be better organized and clearly defined, contributing to an overall lack of clarity in the flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource shows a limited range of vocabulary and several inaccuracies. Words like "deliberated" and "precious money" are inappropriate or misused. The attempt at varied vocabulary is evident, but errors such as "he neither opened a book" and "now he is fully dependent on internet" indicate a need for more precision. There are also repetitions, such as "individuals" and "person," pointing to a limited lexical variety. Overall, the use of language lacks sophistication, affecting the writer's ability to convey ideas effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Grammatical accuracy presents several issues, as evidenced by errors such as "the reason to that is" and "there a few disadvantages of this is." Sentence structures are often awkward or incorrect, including run-on sentences. Issues with subject-verb agreement can be seen in "individuals should use physical books rather than wasting time on their smart phones and distracting again and again." The use of a more varied grammatical range is limited, with many simple sentences that do not demonstrate complexity in ideas or structure.

Overall feedback

Your essay demonstrates an understanding of the topic and attempts to discuss key points related to the future of print media. However, it lacks a clear structure, making it hard for the reader to follow your arguments. To improve your task achievement, clearly state your opinion in the introduction and conclude with strong summarization. Increase the sophistication of your vocabulary and be mindful of grammatical accuracy by reviewing sentence structures. Utilize more linking phrases to enhance coherence, ensuring that each paragraph transitions smoothly into the next.
