IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I agree with that in future very few number of people will buy printed newspapers or books because most of the people will be able to read everything they online. In the twenty-first century, the trend of moving from physical thing to digital things, people point of view has changed a lot.

The books have also been digitalized, the new method of teaching in coaching centers also do prefer introducing digital platforms to learn rather than using books that have been printed decades ago, as we are moving towards an era that have extensive use of artificial intelligence, people of all ages use artificial intelligence to learn about the facts and recent happening instantly instead of waiting for the newspapers or to open a book to learn the facts and figures.

For instance, one of the most famous example is the use of dictionary, I last used dictionary like 7 years ago since I had access to the cellphone and laptop I go online and ask the browser or online platform to look for a meaning and description about any of the word I need help. There are specific subjects and courses that still need books, specifically when someone is into literature or have a habit of reading, but I have seen people in their fifties now use online platforms to get an update about the recent news rather than waiting for the one to be delivered tomorrow morning.

In the end I would say reinstate the fact that only a few people or regions who do not have access to internet or browser easily might use printed newspapers or books other wise everything is available online.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that printed media will largely disappear. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you provide examples like the use of digital dictionaries and the shift in educational platforms, the argument lacks depth regarding the economic or cultural implications of this transition. The prompt asks 'to what extent,' and while you agree, the discussion remains somewhat superficial. To improve, you should expand on the 'why' behind these trends—for example, discussing the convenience of instant updates versus the tactile experience of physical books. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and could have been used to synthesize your main points more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For instance, you rely heavily on simple transitions like 'For instance' and 'In the end.' Some sentences are loosely connected, such as the transition between the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more explicit. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'digitalized,' 'artificial intelligence,' and 'online platforms.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'physical thing to digital things' and 'waiting for the one to be delivered.' To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. Avoid overly simplistic phrasing and try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms to express your ideas with greater nuance and variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'very few number of people,' 'people point of view,' and 'an era that have extensive use.' There are also issues with article usage ('the use of dictionary') and subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate better control over complex structures and pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules, such as pluralization and the correct use of articles.
