IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the modern era, people are highly influenced by technology. Many individuals believe a time will come, where people will prefer the use digital media over printed media without a fee. I agree with this for a range of reasons elaborated subsequently.
First and foremost, we are currently living in a hustle culture. People don’t have time to physically visit stores and purchase books or newspapers. Furthermore, every individual carries a smart phone in their hand. This allows them to access variety of digital media, just by a click on phone without paying a subscription fee. For instance, my cousin, while commuting to work in a metro, utilizes this time to read news on his mobile phone. Therefore, accessing news or books is easier by the use of technology.
Additionally, the marketing companies are actively promoting different options for digital books such as kindle or a tablet. These gadgets offer several advantages such as a large screen, highly portable and accessible, this encourages to read more efficiently at any given time. Furthermore, individuals consider it as a one time investment with unlimited access to different forms of media, rather than paying everyday for a newspaper or buying a new book. For example, my nephew, uses his Samsung tablet to read a variety of story books instead of buying physical copies which is more expensive. Therefore, people prefer investing in digital books which is more economical.
On the other hand, some people disagree with the use of technology. They believe it doesn’t replace the feeling of holding a book. They also say it is not user friendly especially to elderly, who has limitations in understanding the use of smartphones or tablets. For example, an older person finds the buying a newspaper from store more feasible, rather than trying to download it online. However, this isn’t a major issue as majority of the people in future will know the use of technology.
In conclusion, the future belongs to digitalization, most people will prefer reading for free rather than buying a newspaper or a book and only a small percentage would choose the traditional forms of reading.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that you agree with the statement. Your arguments regarding the convenience of digital media and the cost-effectiveness of e-readers are relevant and well-supported with examples. However, the response could be improved by exploring the 'without paying' aspect more critically, as you assume all digital content will be free, which is a significant generalization. To reach a higher band, ensure you address the implications of this assumption more thoroughly rather than just focusing on the convenience of technology.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the flow between ideas could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the benefits of tablets and the counter-argument about elderly users could be more sophisticated to improve the overall progression of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hustle culture', 'digitalization', and 'economical'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'utilizes this time to read' (where 'uses' or 'spends' would be more natural) and 'the buying a newspaper' (which is grammatically awkward). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is sometimes lacking. To improve, focus on more natural collocations and ensure that your word choices are consistently appropriate for an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the use digital media' (missing 'of'), 'access variety' (missing 'a'), and 'who has limitations' (should be 'who have'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'highly portable and accessible, this encourages'. These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would help elevate your score.
