IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that printed newspaper or books will disappear in the future because people will have full access to the information or books they want. I believe that digital media and internet will become increasingly dominant in the future, I do not believe that printed publications will completely disappear.

There are several reasons why online content is likely to replace printed newspaper or books. Firstly, digital media is more convenient and easily accessible. People can readily access information , books and newspaper through their smartphones without carrying the heavy books and dictionaries.

Secondly, there are lot of websites offering information, research and books free of cost. This factor is widely attracted by students and people who cannot afford to buy books regularly. Another factor is that you can find up-to-date information on the internet. On the other hand, printed publications or books may be outdated.

However, I also believe that print media will have its significance in the future as well. Many people feel comfortable reading physical newspaper or books because they can read information without any online distractions and notifications. It is also more convenient for the people with eyesight problems because it does not spread harmful rays like other electronic devices. It is more likely that reading newspaper will sharpen human's eye activity.

In conclusion, I assume that the free online content will become more popular and books will decline significantly. However, the idea that nobody will buy books in future is completely false. Consequently, printed media will be available and continue to exist for the people who prefer them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that acknowledges the rise of digital media while arguing against the total disappearance of print. The ideas are relevant and supported by logical arguments, such as convenience for digital media and the lack of distractions for physical books. However, the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the point about 'eyesight problems' and 'harmful rays' is a bit underdeveloped and lacks scientific nuance. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more sophisticated examples or deeper analysis of the societal implications of these reading habits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'Another factor is that...' could be improved by using more varied linking structures. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is functional.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'increasingly dominant' and 'significance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'This factor is widely attracted by students' (which should be 'This factor attracts students') and 'sharpen human's eye activity' (which is unnatural). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and varied lexical items would be needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' printed newspaper) and pluralization ('printed newspaper or books'). There are also minor punctuation issues, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over these structures is inconsistent.
