IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is a belief that demand of buying printed newspaper or books would reduce in future. Instead people would be interested to read books in free of charge from online. I completely agree with this statement. This essay will discuss these views and why I agree.

On the one hand, Technology advancement has brought the world in our hand. Thus, many digital devices such as, tablets, I-phone, E-reader are convenient source of reading books. Moreover, some upgraded websites are there in which anyone can read books with or without payment. For example, nowadays, people can browse various books in Amazon Kindle, which is the largest online book store. People just buy Kindle E-reader and can enter into this bookshop. Some needs payment while some are free of charge. So, they do not have to go malls physically and pass through crowds to buy their just one favourite book.

On the other hand, printed books or newspaper may need extra costs. However, people who are fond of reading, they do not pay attention about costs. Mostly, they prefer reading books or newspaper by buying them physically in order to feel the sense and smell of new piece of papers which is not possible if they buy them from online. In addition, some may feel restless in their eyes from looking for a long time in screens. Thus, many who wants to read with digital devices they simply buy Kindle E-reader, which is relaxable for eyes at the same time. This is helpful to curb the screen time. Although sometimes it become hard to find favourite article or book in markets, these books are available online. Buying books from malls can be time consuming. Therefore, some people prefer reading books online as they are reliable and easy to find.

In conclusion, No one may be interest in buying printed newspapers or books in upcoming days, rather poeple would find online more reliable to read them as they do not pay charges for it. I fully agreed with the statement and reason has been explained in the above essay.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding the convenience of digital devices and the sensory experience of physical books. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the argument about 'free of charge' content is a central part of your thesis, but it is not fully explored or supported with evidence, as many online platforms still require subscriptions or purchases. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are more logically robust and directly address the 'without paying' aspect of the prompt more critically.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in your argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Thus, many who wants to read with digital devices they simply buy Kindle E-reader.' Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, which forces the reader to re-read sentences to grasp the intended meaning. Improving the variety and natural flow of your linking words will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'technological advancement' and 'convenient source.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'demand of buying' instead of 'demand for,' 'in free of charge' instead of 'free of charge,' and 'relaxable for eyes' which is not standard English. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit your ability to convey ideas with precision. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated collocations and ensuring accurate word forms will be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('many who wants to read'), incorrect preposition usage ('in free of charge'), and awkward phrasing ('brought the world in our hand'). While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors that detract from the overall fluency. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the number of error-free sentences will be key to moving into the 7.0 band.
