IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the upcoming era, no one is going to purchase printed books and newspaper because all reading material will available to read without any charge. I agree with statement at some extent whereas, demand of printing newspaper and books will be there due to interest of people.

On the one hand, human beings are moving towards the online reading and podcast of articles and books which make them more comfortable as per their convenience to read it. For instance, a study has been done on 1000 people of age between 20-35 to check the ratio of online readers, which presents as compare to previous years people are drastic increase in online reading because its easily available at any place. Moreover, some individuals are not interested to read by themselves so they will listen the podcasts which make them update with the current news without reading and these details are available free on the internet most of the time.

On the other hand, not all inhabitants interested to do reading online it is their personal choice or they prefer to read books and newspaper offline because they are more comfort with it. For example, older people do not have much knowledge about online platforms where they can read the reliable content so they rely on offline reading although, not all articles are freely available on the internet. Furthermore, few people want to reduce their screen time so they will prefer to read the content by themselves which give them more satisfaction as compare to online reading.

In Conclusion, online reading is attracting young generation more to read articles and details online Although older people still using the offline mode of reading books and newspaper which shown a result that offline printing will be there in future also it can be decrease by number but totally elimination from the market is not possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the total elimination of printed media is unlikely. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of digital media versus the preference of older generations for physical books. However, the development is somewhat limited. For example, the mention of a study on 1000 people is vague and lacks specific findings, and the argument regarding 'free' content is not fully explored, as many online sources require subscriptions. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples to support your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In Conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions are awkward, such as 'which shown a result that'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. You rely on common terms like 'reading material', 'online', and 'books'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'drastic increase in online reading' (should be 'a drastic increase') and 'totally elimination' (should be 'total elimination'). While the meaning is generally clear, the vocabulary does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more topic-specific collocations and academic vocabulary would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('I agree with statement'), incorrect verb forms ('will listen the podcasts'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('older people still using'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors would be beneficial.
