IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is debated issue that in upcoming years everybody will not be rely on printed books and newspapers because they have instant access to online platforms. I firmly agree with this statement because of saving time, cost and instant access.

Firstly, people would not prefer to read books, magazines, and newspapers in future because they do not want to spend money on buying books. Although people will have interest in reading and studying books, they would not visit markets on finding books. people will study books and newspapers on their smart phones rather than wasting time and cost. For example, in recent study mobile phone's demand has been expanding day by day and will be expansion in the future. As a result people will like to study on their smart phones.

Secondly, people have instant access with globally platforms. internet is providing such platforms which offers each and every daily news and information. People already do not have space in their home hold to keep such stuff, so definitely they will study on their mobile. Furthermore most ad-supported news websites and open-excess educational materials expand so people would not feel problem in reading from different platforms and pages. For instance, in most countries have globally excessed and they are connected with other nations and know about their affaires. As a result in the future they will be linked by having information from news.

In conclusion, people will not be able to walk on different places just looking for books and waiting for morning news paper. They have different platforms and will use these pages in future for saving time and cost.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of the shift toward digital media. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. While you mention cost and convenience, the arguments are not fully extended. For instance, the claim that people do not have space in their homes for books is a relevant point, but it is not explored in detail. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more nuanced analysis rather than repeating the same points about saving time and money. The conclusion is a bit brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'such stuff'). Some transitions feel forced, and the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition between the mention of mobile phone demand and the conclusion of that paragraph is slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to previous nouns would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'study books', 'saving time and cost', and 'different platforms'. There are also some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'globally platforms', 'open-excess', and 'globally excessed', which hinder the clarity of your message. To improve, focus on learning more sophisticated collocations related to technology and media, and ensure you are using words in their correct context. Expanding your range of synonyms will help avoid the repetitive nature of the current text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'everybody will not be rely'), incorrect article usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'It is debated issue'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in sentence construction that make some parts of the text difficult to follow. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect verb forms. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will be key to moving up the band scale.
