IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is often argued that printed newspapers and books will eventually become obsolete because people will be able to access all the information they need online at no cost. While digital media is undoubtedly transforming the way people consume information, I disagree that printed publications will disappear entirely.

There are several reasons why online content is likely to become increasingly dominant. First, digital information is considerably more convenient and accessible than printed material. People can read news articles, books and academic resources instantly on smartphones, tablets or computers, regardless of their location. Moreover, online platforms can be updated continuously, allowing readers to obtain the latest information without waiting for a new edition to be published. The availability of free websites and digital libraries may also encourage people to reduce their spending on printed materials.

Nevertheless, I believe that printed newspapers and books will continue to have a place in society. One important reason is that many readers prefer the physical experience of reading a printed book. Unlike digital devices, paper does not require a battery and is less likely to cause distractions from notifications, advertisements or other applications. Printed books are also particularly valued for prolonged reading because some people find them more comfortable and easier to concentrate on. Furthermore, certain newspapers, magazines and books provide carefully edited and professionally produced content that readers may be willing to pay for despite the abundance of free information online.

In conclusion, although free online content will undoubtedly reduce the demand for printed newspapers and books, I do not believe it will eliminate them completely. Digital media will probably become the primary source of information, but printed publications are likely to survive because of their convenience for focused reading, reliability and enduring appeal.
