IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the future, there will be a downward trend in the purchase of hard copies of newspapers and books because people will have access to read everything online without spending money. I agree with the statement as technology will be developed enormously in the coming decades.

Firstly, technology is making progress day by day and due to advancements in technology and artificial intelligence, people will stop buying printed books, magazines and newspapers. Nowadays, everything can be accessed easily if we have an internet connection, therefore, people prefer watching news on social media websites such as YouTube or Twitter. Scribd is the best example of this. It is an online reading website where users can find every type of book that they want to read at their own pace. Additionally, people can read the summarized versions of books and newspapers with the help of artificial intelligence tools such as chatgpt. In this way, it will take less time too read long books.

Secondly, as books are made from paper which require a large amount of wood. Deforestation is increasing globally to meet the growing needs of humans in paper industry. Global warming is increasing at a rapid rate due to decline of forests. For instance, to combat this problem, several organizations are running campaigns to encourage people to adopt sustainable forms of reading such as either reading or watching news on digital devices online. Further, people will prefer online reading instead of buying books as it is more economical and individuals can save their money and spend it somewhere else.

To conclude, there will be no more printed books because people can read everything online due to advancements in the technology and a way of sustainable living. But, still few older people will prefer more conventional form of reading even in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the author agrees with the statement. The ideas are relevant, focusing on technological convenience and environmental benefits. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the point about technology is well-supported with examples like Scribd and ChatGPT, the environmental argument is a bit tangential to the core prompt about 'not paying' for content. The conclusion acknowledges a counter-argument, which adds balance, but the overall development could be more nuanced to reach a higher band. The response is fully relevant and maintains a consistent position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as technological progress and environmental impact. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between the environmental argument and the economic argument within the second body paragraph is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the final sentence of the conclusion and the rest of the essay is slightly disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'sustainable forms of reading' and 'combat this problem'. However, there are some inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'technology will be developed enormously' (should be 'will advance significantly') and 'decline of forests' (should be 'loss of forests' or 'deforestation'). While the range is sufficient to communicate the message, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which require a large amount of wood' (a sentence fragment), 'either reading or watching news' (incorrect correlative usage), and 'still few older people' (missing article 'a'). Despite these errors, the meaning is rarely obscured, and the reader can follow the argument without difficulty. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and complex sentence connectors to increase the frequency of error-free sentences.
