IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

NO ONE IN FUTURE WILL BUY PRINTED NEWSPAPERS OR BOOKS AS THEY WILL BE ABLE TO READ EVERYTHING THEY WANT ONLINE WITHOUT ANY CHARGE. I LARGELY AGREE ON THIS STATEMENT AND IN THIS ESSAY, REASONS FOR MY AGREEMENT WILL BE MENTIONED.

ON THE ONE HAND, AS THE TECHONOLOGY IS GETTING ADVANCE, IN FUTURE EVERYONE WILL AVOIDE NEWSPAPERS AND PHYSICAL BOOKS, AS THEIR WILL BE BETTER ALTERNATIVES. SUCH AS, ONLINE PLATFORMS, ELECTRONIC BOOKS AND PODCASTS AS WELL. ADDING TO THIS, IN ONLINE WEBSITS THERE ARE MORE GENERE AVAILABLE AND ALL THE NEWS ARE GETTING UPDATED ON TIME, THIS CAN BE COST EFFECTIVE AND EASILY PORTABLE ALSO. AS THE EXCESS USE OF PAPER HAS BEEN DONE, TO PROTRACT ENVIROMNEMT USING ONLINE RESOURCES WILL BE MORE BENEFICIAL. BY THIS METHOD ANYONE CAN READ BOOKS OR NEWSPAPER WITHOUT THE FEAR OF LOOSING THEM OR GETTING DESTROID.

ON THE OTHER HAND, THERE MIGHT BE FEW DISADVANTAGES OF USING E-BOOKS OR APPS FOR GETTING KNOWLEDGE, SUCH AS, THE EXPERIENCE OF HOLDING A BOOK WHICH IS A PIECE OF HISTORY, WHICH HOLDS MORE EMOTIONS THAT ANY DIGITAL APPLICATION. PHYSICAL BOOKS AND NEWSPAPER CAN BE VALUED VERY HIGH IF THEY HAVE ANY BACKSTORYS OR ANY HISTORICAL MOMENTS LINKED TO THEM. ALSO, THEIR CAN BE A MAJOR ISSUE WITH INFORMATION AS IN PRINTED FORM THERE ARE LESS CHANCES OF RE-WRITING COMPARED TO ONLINE PLATFORMS.

IN CONCLOSION, BOOKS CAN HOLD GREATER MEANING AND EMOTIONS IN A SOCIETIE, BUT I BELIEVE IN FUTURE THE MAJOR WAY TO GET INFORMATION OR READING BOOKS WILL BE EXCESSED BY ONLINE ONLY, AS IT'S BENEFICAL FOR BOTH ECOSYSTEM AND COST EFFECTIVE.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both the advantages of digital media and the counter-arguments regarding the emotional value of physical books. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that online platforms are 'cost effective' is mentioned twice but not explained in detail, and the argument regarding the 'backstory' of physical books is a strong point that could have been expanded further to reach a higher band. To improve, ensure that each main point is supported by a specific example or a more thorough explanation of the 'why' and 'how' behind your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure of your argument. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is unclear, such as the phrase 'By this method' which does not clearly link back to a specific antecedent. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'alternatives,' 'portable,' and 'ecosystem.' However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'TECHONOLOGY,' 'AVOIDE,' 'WEBSITS,' 'GENERE,' 'PROTRACT,' 'ENVIROMNEMT,' 'DESTROID,' 'BACKSTORYS,' and 'CONCLOSION.' These errors are frequent and occasionally distract the reader. Furthermore, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'excess use' instead of 'excessive use' and 'excessed by' instead of 'accessed via.' To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and expanding your use of collocations to sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'their will be' (instead of 'there'), 'all the news are' (instead of 'is'), and 'more emotions that' (instead of 'than'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of homophones like 'there/their/they're,' and practice constructing more complex sentences with accurate punctuation.
