IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern era of technology, gaining access to information and news has became significantly easy, which makes it more accountable and accessible to people of any age. These advancements have also influenced the newspapers, as they are now getting available on online platforms and on internet. In my opinion, this statement is true and agreeable.

Availability of newspaper, and access to the information or news through internet and online platforms are replacing the traditional methods of reading books and printed newspapers, as they do not require space to be stored, easy to access, exposure to vast range of information. Furthermore, browsing through internet has became significantly easier and simpler than previous, becoming a much favorable option to choose over conventional methods.

In addition, there are several other advantages, such as, wise use of paper, prevention of overexploitation of natural resources, regulating deforestation due to reduced demand of paper and books. However, there are several major consequences are evident, and should not be undermined. As, the online platforms grow, expand and provide more and new facilities, the risk of online frauds, cyberattacks increases simultaneously. Moreover, the senior citizens and children who are exposed to internet and online platforms are more prone to such incidents, which leads to cyberbullying and unknown cyberattacks.

Therefore, it can be concluded that, choosing online methods to gather information and news would be a great step towards technological developments, replacing the conventional methods and need to store the and maintain the records and copies of books and newspapers, and eliminating the requirement to pay, however, the the risks of cyberattacks, misinformation, lack of information can lead to several significant consequences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention environmental benefits and the risks of cyberattacks, the argument regarding the 'free' aspect of the prompt is underdeveloped. You state that online platforms eliminate the requirement to pay, but you do not critically evaluate whether this is realistic or sustainable. The ideas are relevant, but they lack depth and specific examples to support the claim that printed media will disappear entirely. To improve, ensure you provide a more balanced exploration of the counter-arguments and provide more substantial evidence for your main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Therefore', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'As, the online platforms grow'. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear; for instance, in the second paragraph, the list of benefits lacks a proper grammatical structure to connect it to the main clause. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that cohesive devices are used more naturally would help elevate your score in this area.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'overexploitation', 'deforestation', and 'cyberattacks'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'gaining access to information... has became significantly easy' (should be 'has become') and 'becoming a much favorable option' (should be 'a much more favorable option'). There is also some repetition of basic vocabulary. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate in different contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('has became'), missing articles ('on internet'), and awkward sentence fragments ('As, the online platforms grow...'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are unnecessary commas, such as in 'As, the online platforms grow'. To improve, focus on mastering basic verb tenses and article usage. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they remain error-free will help you achieve a higher band score.
