IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
As technological developments have started at a greater pace making everything easily accessible online, people would prefer reading books and newspapers online. I agree with this statement although it has some drawbacks but the benefits outweigh them.
Firstly, it would cause a fall in deforestation as people would be saving trees since trees would need to be cut to make paper, and this could be opted as a very sustainable choice. This helps in protecting the environment and keeping the ecosystem safe. Moreover, it has an added benefit of being obtainable to everyone easily online with no charge. This would actually be sustainable and beneficial for those pupils who don't have the means to buy new books. For example, it also helps the older generation since they won't have to wait for the newspaper, the news would be available online as soon as something happens and people can have access to magazines, articles etc.
However, by turning everything online, it would ruin children's eyesight and excessive screentime would be very problematic since the children can get distracted since technological devices have many other features and this thus can cause problems as it also needs an internet connection to access these books and newspapers whereas, printed books and newspapers are handmade. Going to a library and reading a hardcopy of a book is more beneficial for children's brains and causes them to think critically which would not the case by turning everything online. Since, old people are old fashioned, many prefer newspapers since they have been used to it and they don't want changes as they are not used to technology as much as the younger generation is which can make it harder for them.
In my opinion, parents need to keep an eye on their children and keep a limit to their screentime, which will be easier to keep them under control and the older generation can learn how to access newspapers online and take help from the younger generation to learn.
In conclusion, I agree with this statement as it helps to counter deforestation and keep our environment safe. IT also makes everything more accessible and easier.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the benefits of online reading outweigh the drawbacks. The ideas regarding environmental impact and accessibility are relevant and supported with examples. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument about children's eyesight and critical thinking is a bit repetitive and could have been more tightly linked to the prompt's core question about the future of printed media. The conclusion is a bit brief and merely restates the introduction rather than synthesizing the main points effectively. Overall, the response is well-focused but would benefit from deeper analysis of the societal implications of a fully digital future.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'this' to refer to broad concepts. The paragraphing is appropriate, though the final paragraph is quite short. Overall, the information is arranged coherently, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use a range of vocabulary, such as 'deforestation', 'sustainable', and 'ecosystem'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'obtainable to everyone easily' and 'handmade' to describe printed books. Some word choices are repetitive, and the student relies on general terms rather than more precise academic collocations. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more sophisticated vocabulary and ensuring collocations are natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'technological developments have started at a greater pace' and 'which would not the case'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and issues with comma usage. The student attempts complex structures, but these are not always error-free. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence construction would improve the accuracy.
