Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a partial agreement, but the development of ideas is significantly hindered by unclear expression and a lack of logical progression. The arguments regarding why people might prefer printed media versus digital are present but are often obscured by confusing phrasing, such as the mention of 'snakes' (likely a misspelling of 'snacks') and the contradictory statements about whether the author agrees or disagrees. The response lacks a clear, sustained position, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's line of reasoning. To improve, ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-supported argument that directly relates to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is weak. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand', they are often used incorrectly or in contexts that do not logically connect the ideas. For instance, the transition 'in spite of' is used inappropriately. The referencing is also unclear, making it difficult to track the subject matter across sentences. The progression of ideas is disjointed, and the conclusion does not effectively summarize the main points or restate the position clearly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and often inaccurate. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'instated of using' (instead of), 'mitigate' (used incorrectly), and 'bought printer paper' (referring to printed books). Some words are used in ways that impede meaning, such as 'snakes' instead of 'snacks'. The writer struggles to use precise terminology related to the topic of digital versus print media. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on learning topic-specific collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical and semantic contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, verb tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'the World today many individual nowadays investigation a new technology' and 'they can not bought printer paper'. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost always faulty, leading to confusion. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. The writer relies heavily on simple, often fragmented, sentence structures. A focus on mastering basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement is essential for improvement.
