IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued that in the future no one will purchase any printed books or newspapers because they will be able to read each thing they want online for free. I completely agree with this statement that technological development has weakened the role of printed based papers.

To begin with, the primary reason why I agree with this view is that in this era of modern technology, everything has into the internet. This is mainly due to the fact that people do not want to expense their money on them which are absolutely free of cost. In addition, people can read newspapers or any type of books in anytime or anywhere by using their smartphones and laptop. It is also a hassle to carry printed books or newspapers instead of e-book. For instance, Student can download e-book and read them on mobile phones while traveling or staying at home. As a direct consequence these benefits will encourage people to read books online in the future.

Furthermore, another significant argument in favor of this view is that lot of trees cut down for making paper-based books and newspapers. In future, If this process will continue then our nature will face a massive digester for the deforestation. Th

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, ending abruptly at 207 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the second body paragraph is incomplete and the conclusion is entirely missing. While the position is clear, the arguments are under-developed due to the lack of length. The prompt asks for an extent of agreement, and while you state your position, the supporting points lack the necessary depth and academic rigor required for a higher band. To improve, you must ensure you complete the essay structure and provide fully extended arguments for each point raised.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay shows some logical organization with the use of transition signals like 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore'. However, the progression is interrupted by the incomplete nature of the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is cut off mid-sentence, which disrupts the overall flow. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'As a direct consequence these benefits will encourage...'. To improve, focus on ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence, supporting evidence, and a concluding thought, and ensure the essay is finished in its entirety.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'expense their money' (instead of 'spend') and 'massive digester' (likely a misuse of 'disaster'). The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic phrasing. To improve, focus on learning collocations and more academic vocabulary related to technology and environmental issues. Avoid repeating simple words and try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms to convey your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'everything has into the internet' (missing verb), 'in anytime or anywhere' (incorrect preposition), and 'lot of trees cut down' (missing article). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and tense usage, such as 'If this process will continue'. While the meaning is generally understandable, these persistent errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
