IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the futhure nobody will buy printed traditional newspaper or books due to the fact they will be able to read everything online without paying. I completely agree with this argument because many people will have not time in future to sit and read newspaper and also everything will be accessible easily and free.

First of all, many people who read newspaper will prefer online available news or they will simply listen to news by TV or by youtube. In future people will give more importance to online available information because in future online data will be more reliable for people rather than printed information. For example, in the past people prefered to listen to radio news but with the passage of time they changed their attitudes toward printed newspaper. In the same way if the technology will grow in future people prefer online resources because of busy and rush life.

On the other hand, in the present days people who want ot read news they have to pay for printed news but in future if someone want to read or listen the news he will not have to sit down on a spacific place or pay for news. Additionally, in future everything regarding to news will easily available anywhere anytime. The human mind always runs for comfort and easiness so in future without any effort everything will be accessible.

To conclude, in future people rely on online information and news rather than printed information due to the effectivness and reliability of online resources. Personally, I believe even nowadays people have no time to sit down and read the printed news and in future it will also be very rare.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of the statement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument that people are 'busy' is mentioned multiple times without exploring the nuance of why physical books might still hold value for some, or the economic reality of 'free' content. The response focuses heavily on the convenience of digital media but fails to fully address the 'nobody will buy' aspect, which is a strong absolute claim. To reach a higher band, you should provide more varied supporting arguments and address potential counter-arguments more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In the same way if the technology will grow'. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words rather than repeating simple structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'good', 'easy', and 'things'. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'reliable' and 'effectiveness', there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'rush life' instead of 'fast-paced life' or 'spacific place'. Spelling errors, such as 'futhure', 'prefered', and 'ot', also occur. To improve, focus on learning collocations and more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people who read newspaper' instead of 'newspapers'), missing articles, and incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'if the technology will grow' instead of 'if technology grows'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent verb tense usage and article placement would significantly improve your accuracy.
