IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that in the future no one will purchase any printed books or newspapers because they will be able to read each thing they want online for free. I completely agree with this statement that technological development has weakened the role of printed based papers.

To begin with, the primary reason why I agree with this view is that in this era of modern technology, everything has into the internet. This is mainly due to the fact that people do not want to expense their money on them which are absolutely free of cost. In addition, people can read newspapers or any type of books in anytime or anywhere by using their smartphones and laptop. It is also a hassle to carry printed books or newspapers instead of e-book. For instance, Student can download e-book and read them on mobile phones while traveling or staying at home. As a direct consequence these benefits will encourage people to read books online in the future.

Furthermore, another significant argument in favor of this view is that lot of trees cut down for making paper-based books and newspapers. In future, if this process will continue then our nature will face a massive digester for the deforestation. In particular, the amount of carbon dioxide and the temperature will increase significantly. Therefore, eBook will be a better alternative than printed books because it does not pollute environment and easy to carry.

In conclusion, considering the factors discussed above, I strongly believe that printed newspapers and books will become less popular in the future because people will be aware its effect on nature and also, they can access a wide range of information online for free.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear position in favor of the shift to digital media. The ideas are relevant, focusing on convenience and environmental impact. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument regarding the environmental impact is a bit simplistic, and the claim that all online content will be 'free' is an overgeneralization that could have been nuanced. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments could be expanded with more sophisticated analysis to reach a higher band. The response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'In addition,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'them which are absolutely free,' where the pronoun reference is unclear. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive links rather than relying on standard signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'deforestation' and 'alternative,' but there are also noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'expense their money' (instead of 'spend') and 'massive digester' (likely meaning 'disaster'). These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'everything has into the internet' (missing verb), 'in anytime or anywhere' (preposition error), and 'Student can download' (missing article). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'if this process will continue.' These errors occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended message. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy is recommended.
