IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people argue that due to the rise of the Internet no person will buy books or newspapers in the future as information would be readily available and would be free of cost. I agree that printed newspapers and books would not remain popular in the near future because reading online is much more convenient and also that it costs alot less.
Firstly, beacause our lives have become extremely fast paced thanks to the extremely competitive mordern era where many people work for longer hours with tighter deadlines leading to a limited amount of time available for a persons own well being .This scarcity of time means that it would be unlikely that people go out of their way to buy books or newspapers by travelling to the stores when they can easily access the same content and the same news via phones and computers, at their fingertips reagrdless of their geographic location.Thus ,people would cease to consume printed books and newspapers because it would cost them their time and their comfort zone eventually switching to the mordern day alternative of the Internet and its devices.
Secondly, it would not be a viable option for people especially for students who would need to pay to read the printed books or newspapers which can already be accessed online without any cost. Since printing books and other media incurs costs related to paper, press machines and printing ink it is obvious that publishers would charge an amount to cover the costs. However, in case of online resources they do not require such costs as any document can be made available with just a tap and can be accessed on websites on the Internet. This is supported even further by the fact that not only local information or news is available at no cost but even news and books related to other countries can be accessed via the Internet. This basically eliminates the need to use printed media as knowledge is te main purpose of consuming books and newspapers which is done more effectively via online resources.
In conclusion, I believe that even though some people may prefer to have printed books and newspapers to improve their focus and make it more realistic and engaging ultimately given the time and cost constraint majority of the population in the future will prefer online books and newspapers.
